I post at SearchCommander.com now, and this post was published 18 years 9 months 3 days ago. This industry changes FAST, so blindly following the advice here *may not* be a good idea! If you're at all unsure, feel free to hit me up on Twitter and ask.

Spam is everyones responsibility. Today, I had to send the following email to a business owner that I know, who simply hadn’t ever thought about the subject before.

(his name and business type aren’t really X, by the way… )

Dear X,

You sent out an email with over 40 people in the To: field, sharing the email addresses of all of your mailing list for everyone to see. Since the subject of your email was the local Portland X business, I knew that at least one person on that list would seize the opportunity to send me another (spam) message, and sure enough, it took less than two hours.

This same concept applies to forwarding jokes, but when it’s your business, it can hurt you financialy too.
This is a highly targeted list of people with a commonly shared interest in X and you’ve just added us all to the mailing list.

If you’re going to use Outlook to forward jokes or send any mail whatsoever to a group, then ALWAYS send using the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) option.

Have the To: field addressed to yourself, and put your addresses in the BCC field below CC. If it’s not visible, then hit the “To” button to add it. Then you’re protecting the privacy of your friends, associates and customers.

If you have a business, and want to send any commercial email, to keep yourself out iof trouble, you’re better off using a low cost commercial service that follows the CAN-Spam act guidelines, as I mentioned in this post earlier this month.

If you like what you've seen here, would you please share this?
